Immigration verses EmigrationNot everyone knows the difference between Immigration and Emigration, just as they might not know the difference between Ingress and Egress, or ausgang or eingang...oops sorry, that just slipped out (chuckle). When working on/with genealogy you are dealing with people coming and going from all sorts of countries or locations, and, when reading about how America was settled (another article) you will see where immigrants came to America, e.g. from Ireland, then they became emigrants when they left New York and went to Oregon. I will keep this as simple as I can. Immigration: To enter a country or location. Therefore, an immigrant is someone who immigrates or enters a country or location. Emigration: To leave a country or location. Therefore, an emigrant is someone who emigrates or leaves a country or location.
