Mozilla Firefox is a web browser like Internet Explorer, etc. BUT, it is superior to any browser we've ever used. We've used it for several years and it just keeps getting better and better and faster and faster. In fact it is now the fastest web browser out there. And it is free. All you have to do is go to the link and download it.
Mozilla Thunderbird is an email client and a great one at that. Having Firefox and Thunderbird, if you want to surf the web but not have your email open you can do it, or vice versa. You can set up limitless email. For example our web host is Ipower.com (which is fantastic but not free, but it is superior to any other host we've ever used. Read more below), and we have over a dozen websites that we operate/manage/design, and wayyyy too many email addresses to count. Ipower.com allows 2500 email addresses per account, so you can imagine how quick they might grow. But with a very simple setup in Thunderbird, we have all those email addresses organized and secure, and they can connect to their own servers, etc. Thunderbird is a dream!
And don't forget to check all of Mozilla's add ons/plug ins/extensions/etc. There are several thousand I would imagine....all FREE. We just found a FTP and even a web page validator program. FREE. They also have a free Mozilla backup program to backup both the above programs. Did we mention that all these are free?
Open Office is a free and open productivity kit. Open Office is a full featured office suite that's totally compatible with Microsoft Office. Open Office includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Base, Draw, Math, even pdf creation (to include making them secure - uncopyable and unprintable). Saves and opens cross platform documents. (I got a .doc from a friend and couldn't open it with any program I had. Out of desperation I downloaded Open Office and it opened the doc. I was impressed, and still am. I use it all the time.

Hundreds of thousands of free e-books (many in other languages), Digitally re-published by Project Gutenberg. And don't forget to check out their sister sites in Australia and other countries (via Gutenberg's home site).

Anagram Master quickly solves anagram puzzles using a large English dictionary. It is useful for solving anagram problems, scrabble, word yahtzee, word poker and a few other word games and puzzles. You can input any length of anagram and select the size of words to search for. It uses a word list containing 80,000 words (includes plurals). It contains British and American spellings for words. You can also replace the word list with your own; if for example you wanted to search for words without plurals, or even use a completely different language! It is very simple to use, has a small file size, and there's no need to install: just unzip into any directory and run from there. You can also download (for free) word lists for: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish. This program runs on Windows XP only.
